AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School kept winning the big ones last week.
The Rams’ soccer team, ranked number one in the 1-A North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association, topped then fifth-ranked 2-A Kerr-Vance 4-1 here last week.
“We played exceptionally well today,” Ridgecroft Head Soccer Coach Aron Martin said. “I told them before it would take the best match of the year to win and that’s what they gave. I am extremely pleased with the way we played.”
Landon Larabee got things started for Ridgecroft, scoring on an unassisted goal to put the Rams ahead 1-0 in the first period.
Drey Chrysostomou then scored thanks to an assist from Michael Byrum as the Rams padded their lead to 2-0.
Kerr-Vance then tallied their only score of the match to close the gap to 2-1.
That’s when the Chrysostomou repaid the favor, giving Byrum an assist to help the latter put the ball in the back of the net as Ridgecroft jumped ahead 3-1.
The visiting squad put pressure on Ridgecroft as they attempted to get back into the contest, but the Rams overcame the pressure and mounted a few counter attacks.
Those defensive efforts eventually led to Kerr-Vance scoring an own-goal after a free kick from Chrysostomou.
In addition to the offensive efforts, the Rams got stellar defensive play from keeper Jordan Harrell.
“Jordan did a great job in goal,” Martin said. “Overall, we just got a great effort from everyone.”
Ridgecroft improved to 6-1 with the victory.
