ELIZABETH CITY – Northeastern High School spoiled the 2011 tennis debut for Ridgecroft School.

The Lady Eagles used a spotless doubles session to defeat Ridgecroft 8-1 in the season-opener for both teams.

Miller Bryant secured the only win for Ridgecroft Monday.

“We did not play as well as I hoped we would,” veteran Ridgecroft Tennis Coach Elton Winslow said. “We were nervous and inconsistent. We will go back to work in practice and hopefully show improvement Thursday against Gates County.”

The one victory for the Lady Rams came at the number two seed where Miller Bryant knocked off Ali Pfeiffer 6-0 and 6-1.

Northeastern top seed Katy Murray defeated Katie Futrell 6-3 and 6-1 to start the match and third-rated Sarah Harris edged Roxie Daniels 7-6 and 6-1.

In the battle of fourth seeds, Adrian Woods topped McKenzie Quattlebaum 6-0 and 6-3 while number five seed Sarah Scott edged Amber Bracy by counts of 6-4 and 7-5.

The final singles match went to Northeastern’s Katelyn Simpson who topped Elizabeth Joyner 6-4 and 6-1.

In doubles action, Murray and Pfeiffer defeated Futrell and Bryant 8-3 in the top-seeded doubles matchup while Woods and Scott beat Hennie Larabee and Chloe Dunn by the same count at number two doubles.

In the final doubles match of the day, Harris and Simpson defeated Daniels and Quattlebaum, also by an 8-3 count.

Ridgecroft dropped to 0-1 for the season and will host Gates County High School at 4 p.m. Thursday.
