AHOSKIE – Northeast Academy used a strong second half to finish third in the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament.

The Lady Eagles downed Lawrence Academy 37-14 to win the Consolation game in the event which is sponsored by United Country Joe Murray Realty and the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.

Kaylen Rose and Ashton Liverman paced the Northeast attack with 14 and 11 points respectively. Ivey Little finished with eight and Hannah Roye had four points.

Holly McNair led Lawrence with six points while Hallie Corbett had three.

The game was quiet for most of the first half.

McNair gave Lawrence an early lead only to have Rose counter on the other end. Nearly five minutes into the game, Roye broke the tie with a field goal, but Corbett hit 1-of-2 from the line to close the gap to 4-3.

In the closing minutes of the quarter, Liverman scored to push Northeast ahead 6-3.

Things didn’t change in the second quarter as the teams combined for just seven points. Rose had five of them as the Eagles took an 11-5 lead into the intermission.

The third quarter saw Northeast edge ahead 12-5, but Lawrence got back-to-back hoops from Corbett and Meg Sutton as they closed within 12-9.

That was as close as the game would get, however, as the Lady Eagles got a bucket from Roye that started a 15-0 run that allowed Northeast to close the third quarter with a 27-9 lead. Liverman, Rose and Little led the way during that spurt.

The run continued into the final quarter as Little hit back-to-back hoops followed by free throws from Rose to make it 33-9. Liverman and Little then hit successive shots as the lead went to 37-9.

Lawrence scored the final five points of the game to secure the final score.
