Gates tops HCHS

GATESVILLE – Gates County High School improved to 9-2 for the season here Monday.

The Red Barons knocked off non-conference foe Hertford County High School 7-2 in boy’s tennis to claim their ninth win of the year.

In the battle of top seeds, Hertford County’s Cody Clark topped Clay Steward 6-0 ad 6-2.

Gates County then claimed its first win when Ryan Hendrix defeated Devan Gay by dual counts of 6-1 at the number two spot. Tommy Arline followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory for Gates over Aaron Freeman.

In the battle of fourth seeded players, Jerick Garrett topped Desmond Gatling 6-1, 6-0 as Gates continued their victories in the singles competition. Shawn Manley won for the Red Barons at number five, defeating Tyler Toure by dual counts of 6-0.

In the final singles match, Gates County’s Demetrius Adams defeated Josh Spence 6-4 and 6-0.

In doubles action, Hertford County won the battle of top seeds when Clark and Gay defeated Steward and Hendrix 8-5.

Gates County won the next two matchups, however, as Arline and Garrett stopped Freeman and Gatling 8-2 and then Manley and Evans surpassed Jermayn Clark and Raquan Horton 8-1.

The Red Barons will be back in action Monday when they welcome Southeast Halifax High School in a Tar-Roanoke Conference contest.
