AHOSKIE – What caused a driver to veer off the road and slam into a tree remains under investigation.

The single vehicle accident occurred near here Saturday afternoon on NC 561, just west of the Roanoke Electric Cooperative office. There, a 2004 Ford truck, owned and driven by Melinda Whitehead Boone, 45, of Potecasi, was eastbound.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Jones, the truck traveled off the left side of the road where it struck a ditch and came to rest leaning on the driver’s side against a tree.

Emergency response personnel from the Town of Ahoskie, Ahoskie Rural and Union fire departments worked to free Boone from the wreckage. She was transported to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital by Hertford County EMS.

“When I spoke with her at the hospital, she didn’t remember much from the accident, other than she thought something was in the road in front of her, but no witnesses saw that. I’m still investigating that,” said Jones.

Charges are pending, according to Jones.
