Kymonte Jay’son Burden, age 18 of Pinegate Apartments, currently sits in the Hertford County Detention Center in Winton following the Thursday night incident.

Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said the shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday in the yard of the victim (the 400 block of North McGlohon Street).

“The victim was shot more than once with a handgun,” Fitzhugh said.

After being taken to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, the victim was later airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where Fitzhugh said he was listed in fair condition.

Burden was also charged with attempted armed robbery. He made his first court appearance on Friday to answer to both felony charges.

Fitzhugh commended the work of his staff – Sgt. Justin Farmer, Detective Sgt. Stephen White, and Major James Asbell.

“Through their professional investigation, a suspect was developed fairly quickly and Mr. Burden was behind bars by 4 a.m. on Friday,” Fitzhugh said.

Fitzhugh said the investigation continues into this case and additional arrests are pending.
