Butterfield, Jones, Mobley re-elected

Incumbents may not have fared well nationwide, but they did in the Roanoke-Chowan region.
U.S. Representative G.K. Butterfield (D-1st) won reelection Tuesday according to unofficial results while N.C. State Senator Ed Jones and N.C. House member Annie Mobley also secured their return to Raleigh.
In the U.S. House race, Rep. Butterfield won 17 of the 23 counties that comprise North Carolina’s First Congressional District. Locally, he won Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties.
Butterfield’s Republican opponent, Ashley Woolard, claimed victory in six counties, including Gates.
All totaled, Butterfield received 102,236 votes to Woolard’s 70,481.
Locally, the incumbent congressman won Bertie County by a large margin. He was tabbed on 3,899 ballots compared to 2,468 for Woolard. He also took Hertford County easily as he was named on 4,380 ballots while Woolard received 2,133. In Northampton County, Butterfield won 4,575 to 2,959.
The only local county that voted Woolard’s way was Gates County where the challenger received 1,637 votes, three more than Butterfield’s 1,634.
In the state senate race, Senator Jones easily won reelection to his District 4 seat by capturing 62.4 percent of the vote. He was tabbed by 28,825 voters in Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton and Perquimans counties.
His Republican opponent, Rich Halbert, received 17,359 votes.
Jones won Bertie, Gates, Halifax, Hertford and Northampton counties while Halbert won in his home county of Chowan and took Perquimans County.
Locally, Jones took all four counties – Bertie (4,139 to 2,022), Gates (1,816 to 1,375), Hertford (4,743 to 1,656) and Northampton (4,837 to 2,431).
Rep. Mobley won four of the five counties she represents in the North Carolina House of Representatives (District 5). The only county won by her opponent, Matt Peeler, was the challenger’s home of Perquimans County.
Mobley won Bertie County 3,970 votes to 2,219 while taking Gates by a slim margin of 1,628 to 1,576. Hertford County supported their native daughter by a 4,554 to 2,487 count.
