Northeast beats Lawrence 6-3

JACKSON – Northeast Academy grabbed a tennis victory over Lawrence Academy here Monday.

The Lady Eagles defeated Lawrence 6-3 thanks to four wins in the singles’ competition.

The victories for Northeast began at the number three seed where Ivey Little blanked McCaul Nelson by dual counts of 6-0. Northeast number four seed Haley Jones also grabbed a victory, downing Sarah Cowand 6-4 and 6-0.

Taylor Cocke continued the winning way for the Lady Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brittany Lancaster while sixth-seeded Allyson Leggett defeated Lawrence’s Alyson Byrum by the same count.

Lawrence won the top two matchups, however, as Hallie Corbett defeated Kaylon Rose 6-0, 6-0 at number one and second-seeded Bailey Nelson defeated Ashlynn Bridgers 6-1 and 6-2.

In doubles action, Corbett and B. Nelson combined to secure an 8-0 win over Rose and Jones in the top seeded matchup.

Northeast rallied, however, to secure the battle of second-seeded teams when Cocke and Little won 8-2 against M. Nelson and Cowand. Bridgers and Leggett then defeated Lancaster and Byrum 8-1 in the final matchup.

The victory leaves Northeast 8-6 for the season.
