Northeast grabs first win ever over LA

LASKER – Northeast Academy’s varsity volleyball team had an unprecedented victory here Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles took a three-set win over visiting Tarheel Independent Conference rival Lawrence Academy. The straight-set victory was the first Northeast has ever recorded over Lawrence in the program’s history.

Northeast won by counts of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13.

Leading the way for Northeast was Brittany Bolton, who recorded five aces on the afternoon. Dayna Barnes was next with four aces while Lindsey Bryant had two kills, two tips and an ace. Arielle Ricks added a pair of aces while Chelsea Rose had one.

Defensively, Kelsey Lassiter recorded three digs for the Lady Eagles.

“This was an excellent team victory,” Northeast Coach Cap Pfeiffer said. “It feels good to finally beat Lawrence.”

On its side, the Lady Warriors were led by Holly McNair, who had a perfect serving afternoon. She also recorded a pair of aces.

Hayden Thomas had a trio of aces to go with four kills and a block and Kim Northcott added an ace and a kill. Jordyn Lyle had two aces for Lawrence as well.

Northeast improved to 1-1 in the TIC while Lawrence dropped to 0-5 overall.

In the junior varsity portion of the contest, Northeast (1-1) secured a hard-fought 25-19, 26-24 win over the Lady Warriors.

Holly Byrum led the Northeast jayvees with four aces while Alexis Soper, Haley Mayle and Megan Futrell had one each.

“We played well as a team,” Pfeifer said. “It was an excellent first win.”

The Lady Warriors were led by Chelsea Ginn’s four kills and three aces along with two aces and five assists from Giovanna Conigliaro. Olivia Hoggard added two kills and one ace.

“The girls are slowly starting to round into form and do the basics of communicating, opening up and moving,” said LA skipper Dr. Ed Clouse.  “They are still making simple errors that experience will correct.”

Lawrence dropped to 0-4.
