AHOSKIE – A Virginia man lost his life near here Saturday as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Rex Todd Wellons, 58, of Newport News was killed after his 2007 Harley Davidson crashed on the Bluefoot Road.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper S.C. Hegmann, Wellons was traveling north on Bluefoot Road, approximately one mile north of the Ahoskie-Cofield Road, at around 5:43 p.m. on Saturday. The accident report noted that Wellons’ bike traveled off the right side of the road in a curve at which time it impacted a ditch and overturned.

Wellons died at the scene.

Trooper Hegmann listed exceeding safe speed for existing conditions as a contributing factor to the fatal accident.

Hertford County EMS and the Winton Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene of the accident.

The fatality was the second of the year in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). It was the first fatal crash of the year in Hertford County.
