AHOSKIE – An 83-year-old Aulander woman was tragically killed after losing control of her vehicle and crashing head on into another car near here Wednesday afternoon.

Willie Lue Wilkins was pronounced dead at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where she was transported by Hertford CountyEMS following the 2 p.m. accident on Jernigan Swamp Road (RP 1101).

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper B.P. Daniel, the accident took place approximately 1.5 miles south of Ahoskie. There, Daniel’s report revealed that Wilkins was operating a 2011 Ford passenger car southbound on Jernigan Swamp Road.

“Her car crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road at which time it struck a northbound vehicle head on,” Daniel said.

The other vehicle, a 2013 Ford passenger car, was driven by 53-year-old Vickie Edwards of Ahoskie. Her 12-year-old grandson was a passenger in the vehicle.

Daniel said both suffered injuries and were first treated at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and later transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where the grandson underwent surgery for an injury to his leg.

Mrs. Edwards was treated at Vidant Medical Center and later released.

It was initially believed that Wilkins may have suffered a medical condition that caused her to lose control of her vehicle. However, Daniel said a report from the Medical Examiner’s office in Greenville ruled that out.

The accident resulted in the third fatality of the year for the NCHP’s Troop A / District 2 area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Two of those fatalities have been in Hertford County.
