AHOSKIE – A senior citizen proved that despite his age, his reflexes remain razor sharp.

Thanks to the quick action of 67-year-old Harold Brantley, a small child was saved from serious injury here Saturday night.

According to James Broglin, Hertford County Emergency Services Director, the incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the amusement ride area of Ahoskie Heritage Day. There, a young child (age unknown) was attempting to disembark the swing ride before it came to a complete stop.

“From the information I have, the gentleman quickly stepped in to stop the movement of the swings before they struck the child,” Broglin said.

Broglin added that Brantley was transported by Hertford County EMS to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital with “non-life threatening injuries.”

The child was not injured.

It is not known if Brantley was employed by the firm supplying the children’s amusement rides for Heritage Day or if he was a member of the child’s family or just a bystander. Broglin said his report did not list Brantley’s hometown.
