Ahoskie man dies in wreck

AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie man was killed in a single vehicle accident near the St. Johns community early Sunday morning.

Joseph Paul Sumner, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:43 a.m. mishap that occurred on NC 561, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper G.P. Bowman.

The accident report showed that Sumner was operating a 2000 Toyota truck that was traveling east on NC 561. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road where it impacted a ditch and culvert, causing it to overturn several times.

Sumner was ejected from the vehicle.

Bowman said alcohol was suspected as a contributing factor in the accident.
