MERRY HILL – Lawrence Academy is trying to rebuild its once proud football tradition.

While the work is going well and the Warriors are moving in the right direction under first-year skipper Beau Drake, the recipe for success isn’t easy when you square off with the league’s top team.

Word of God Christian Academy rolled to a 64-6 victory here Friday night to remain undefeated for the season. Lawrence dropped to 0-7.

The Warriors started the game with the ball on their own 40-yard line and moved it to the 48, but came up short on fourth down.

Word of God took over and made short work of the field. Quarterback Jason Fields picked up 11 yards on first down and then Qwentrarreus Yarborough went 37 yard to paydirt on the next play. The conversion pass failed, but the Holy Rams were ahead 6-0.

On the next possession, the Warriors were forced to punt, but Word of God blocked the kick and took over on the Lawrence six-yard line. DeMerti Washington picked up two yards on first down and then Fields carried the ball the rest of the distance on the next play.  Zachery Jackson completed the conversion pass to Harrison Smith and Word of God led 14-0 with 6:40 still to play in the first quarter.

The Holy Rams forced an interception on the next Lawrence possession and Quanta Perry returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. The conversion failed, but Word of God was ahead 20-0 with 5:45 to play in the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Word of God scored two more times in the first quarter.

Yarborough had a 39-yard touchdown run with 4:01 to play. The conversion failed. Three minutes later Fields completed a 57-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Lewis. Yarborough added the extra point to give Word of God a 33-0 advantage.

The second quarter didn’t improve things for the home team as the Holy Rams visited paydirt three more times.

Lewis scored on a 53-yard run with 9:08 to play in the second quarter. He added the conversion and Word of God led 41-0.

After a Lawrence turnover, Lewis scored again on a 23-yard run. The conversion by Jackson was good and Word of God had a 49-0 lead with 6:17 to play in the first half.

The final score of the half came when Yarborough scored from 48 yards out. Jackson completed a two-point conversion pass to Lewis to make it 57-0.

As the third quarter started, the Holy Rams continued their scoring onslaught when Fields passed to Lewis for a 43-yard score. Yarborough added the conversion to make it 64-0.

Lawrence got on the board on their last possession of the game as they drove 62 yards on 11 plays. The final play was a Jesse White pass to Blake Stevens for the score. The conversion failed and left the score 64-6, which was the final.

Lawrence will be back in action next week when they travel to Hobgood Academy.
