Shooter sought

AHOSKIE – An early morning shooting here Saturday has left Ahoskie Police officers in search of a suspect.

Warrants have been drawn for 28-year-old Marcus Dewayne Smith, whose last known address is listed as 331 East Richard Street, Ahoskie. Smith is wanted for attempted first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill by inflicting serious injury.

Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh reported that the shooting occurred at around 2:50 a.m. on July 30 near First and Maple streets.

“We did not have a lot to go on immediately after the shooting was reported,” Chief Fitzhugh said. “However, as our investigation continued, as did work on following up on leads, we were able to develop a person of interest, that being Marcus Dewayne Smith.”

Smith is a black male, 5’-10” to 6’ tall and weighing 130 pounds. He has dark hair, sometimes worn in an Afro, and has a dark skin complexion.

Chief Fitzhugh said Smith is to be considered armed and dangerous. He has been known to frequent the Elizabeth City area.

No information was released on the identity or medical condition of the shooting victim.
