AHOSKIE – A head-on crash near here Saturday night resulted in the death of an Ahoskie man.

Floyd Tyrone Walker, 38, was pronounced dead at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital following the 8:48 p.m. two-vehicle accident on NC 561 west of Ahoskie.

According to a report filed by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper R.W. West, Walker was operating a 1998 Chevrolet pick up truck eastbound on NC 561. His truck traveled left of center and collided head-on with a 2004 Chevrolet SUV operated by Earl McCoy Lane, 57, of Halifax.

Lane and a passenger – his wife, 66-year-old Vera Lane, also of Halifax – were transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Their medical condition is unknown.

There were no passengers in Walker’s truck.

The accident report revealed that all victims were wearing seat belts.

What caused Walker’s vehicle to veer left of center is unknown. The use of alcohol and exceeding a safe speed were not contributing factors, according to Trooper West’s report.

Hertford County EMS, fire units from St. John and Ahoskie Rural and NC DOT responded to the accident scene, the latter to spread sand in an effort to absorb fluids leaking from the vehicles.

The fatality was the fifth of the year on public roadways within the NCHP’s Troop A, District II area. Two of those fatalities have occurred in Hertford County.
