Gates tennis tops SE Halifax

CROWELLS CROSSROADS – Gates County High School remained perfect in the Tar-Roanoke Conference here last week.
The Rams topped Southeast Halifax High School 9-0 to earn league win number two for the season.
Clay Stewart started the winning ways for Gates County with a perfect 10-0 pro-set win over Deon White of Southeast Halifax.
Second-seeded Rashaan Sears and sixth-seeded Shawn Manley also made short work of their Trojan opponents. Sears topped Darius Parker 10-1 and Manley beat Devonte Brown by the same count.
Jerick Garrett topped Canoba Caudle 10-2 in a battle of number three seeds before Gates County’s Anthony Dawsom downed William Johnson 10-7.
The final singles victory for the Red Barons came at number five where Demetrius Adams edged Keonte Williams 10-6.
In doubles action, Manley and Chris Edward combined to defeat White and Johnston 8-3 at number one.
Second-seeded Dawson and John Blanchard then knocked off Caudle and Williams 9-7 while Connor Pederson and Dominick topped Parker and Jumangi Smith by a perfect 8-0 count.
The win boosted the Red Barons to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
