WINDSOR – RaShawn Spencer has been suspended from his assignment as head football coach at Bertie High School according to a news release from the office of the Bertie County Schools’ Chief Human Resources Officer.

Spencer, who played collegiately at Elizabeth City State and previously served as head coach at Columbia High School in Tyrell County and most recently was an assistant at fellow Northeastern Coastal Conference member school, Pasquotank, was in his first year at Bertie, having been named to the post earlier this summer.

Will Harrell, offensive coordinator for the team, has been named as acting head football coach pending an internal investigation according to the news release.

Harrell is also in his first year with the Falcon football program and served as field boss for Bertie’s scheduled game at Swansboro High School on Friday night.

“This matter does not in any way impact his (Spencer’s) English teaching position with the district,” the news release went on to say.

The news release added, “It is anticipated that Mr. Spencer will resume his coaching duties in the near future.”
