HCHS rolls by First Flight

AHOSKIE – Hertford County High School advanced to the second round of the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament.
The Lady Bears – seeded number two in the league tourney – knocked off seventh-seeded First Flight High School 59-25 here Monday night.
Brandi Burden and Camaryn Jones scored 14 points each to lead the Lady Bears to their 15th victory of the season in 22 starts.
After the Lady Nighthawks took an early 4-2 lead, HCHS roared back by scoring seven straight points. Sherneice Futrell and Burden had back-to-back hoops before Jones scored from the free throw line. Futrell added two from the charity stripe to make it 9-4.
Hertford County went on to lead 11-6 by the end of the first quarter.
Allie Nolte started the second period with two free throws for First Flight, but the Bears came back with a hoop from Desiree James, a free throw by Jones and a James triple to make it 17-8.
Haley Helms stopped the spurt with a hoop for the ‘Hawks, but Burden and Jones each scored from the free throw line and Burden added a field goal to make it 22-10 in favor of the Lady Bears. HCHS led 24-13 at the intermission.
The third quarter was all Hertford County as the host team outscored their guests 16-3.
The period started with the Bears rolling off 14 straight points. Burden had the first four of those followed by hoops from Futrell and Burden again. Vanessa Mitchell then scored from behind the arc and Burden added another free throw.
Jones finished the scoring run with a hoop that made it 38-13 before Nolte finally scored for First Flight.
Futrell then scored again to make it 40-16 at the end of three quarters of play.
Kayla Everette started the final quarter with a triple for the Bears before Burden and Jones hit back-to-back hoops. Bayley Nicholas then added a triple and Casey Grant scored from the floor to make it 52-16.
Hertford County then cruised on to the 34-point victory.
The Bears advanced to Wednesday night’s semifinal matchup where they met third-seeded Northeastern High School. That game finished too late for press time.
