AHOSKIE – Two weeks and a different result.

Just 15 days ago, Hertford County High School used an excellent outing to knock off previously undefeated Pasquotank County High School in the finals of the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald Holiday Classic sponsored by United Country Joe Murray Realty.

Friday night, it was the Lady Panthers who had an excellent outing as they avenged that loss with a 47-38 Northeastern Coastal Conference victory.

Mikeara Jordan paced Pasquotank with 23 points while Brandi Burden led the Lady Bears attack with a game-high 24 points. Camaryn Jones was also in double digits for HCHS with 12.

The contest was all PCHS early as Jordan and Chelsey Elliot each had buckets as well as a Tyanna Green free throw to make it 5-2.

The Lady Bears came back by scoring four of the last seven points – a bucket by Jones and a pair of free throws from Burden – to close the gap to 8-6 after one period.

Jones scored two more from the charity stripe to tie the game as the second quarter opened, but a Kenitria Riddick bucket pushed Pasquotank bank in front.

Jones and Burden had back-to-back buckets to give HCHS their first lead of the night (12-10), but it was erased quickly on a Brianna Shanks three-pointer.

The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter until HCHS rolled off five straight – a three-point play by Jones and a hoop by Burden – to surge ahead 22-18.

The Bears led 23-21 by the intermission.

The third quarter was all Pasquotank, however. Riddick started the period with a three-pointer before Jordan scored nine of the next 13 points in the contest. She was answered only by a Burden hoop, but Elliot added a bucket for the Panthers, resulting in a double-digit lead for PCHS (35-25).

The Lady Bears chipped away at the advantage thanks to a three-point play by Burden, but the Panthers scored six of the final eight points in the quarter to lead 41-30 heading into the final period.

Burden started the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws and a hoop, but the Bears got no closer as Jordan rolled off two straight scores to push the lead back to double figures.

Hertford County had only one other player to score as Casey Grant added two points.

Elliot had eight for Pasquotank while Riddick had seven and Shanks added six.

The loss dropped Hertford County to 7-6 overall in 2011-12 and 2-2 in the conference.
