WINDSOR – Bertie County Sheriff John Holley says his office is seeking the public’s assistance in the apprehension of three men suspected of a March 8 shooting in Powellsville.

According to Holley, shortly after midnight on March 8, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call for assistance at 110 Bass Lane in Powellsville where there were reports that unknown subjects had shot into an occupied dwelling.

Deputies immediately responded to the area of the call and were able to make a stop of a car matching that of the suspect vehicle.

While conducting an investigatory stop, it was determined that the driver, Corey Mitchell, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The other two occupants of the vehicle were identified as Maurice Higgs and Daquan Bazemore.

The deputies conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and were able to locate and seize two firearms, a .32 caliber revolver and a .45 caliber handgun, in addition to an AK-47 magazine.

As follow-up, the deputies were joined by Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Harrison Williams and Detective Ronald Rascoe who both then conducted a crime scene investigation and interviewed eyewitnesses after collecting evidence.

Upon completion of their investigation the detectives were able to obtain warrants for the three suspects, but were unable to serve them at the time.

The charges for the trio, Mitchell, Bazemore, and Higgs are: discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and/or a moving vehicle; felony conspiracy; and, injury to real property.

Holley says the detectives are currently attempting to locate the suspects who are believed to be residents of Martin County. The warrants for arrest for the suspects are now on file and have been sent to Martin County law enforcement.
