AHOSKIE – Five players scored in double digits here Tuesday.

That was more than enough to help Hertford County High School’s Lady Bears roll to a 71-59 Northeastern Coastal Conference victory over Northeastern High School.

Camryn Jones led the way with 22 points while Briante Bond, who was recognized for her 1,000th career point, chipped in 13. Brandi Burden added 12 for the Bears while Sherniece Futrell and Takia Williams added 10 each.

HCHS got out to an early 8-0 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Williams, a three-point play by Bond and a field goal from Jones.

Northeastern finally stopped the run with a Jasmine Nixon free throw, but Jones came back with another hoop to give the Lady Bears a 10-1 lead.

The Lady Eagles rallied back to close the gap to five (14-9) on a three-pointer by Darian Cole and, when Bond and Cole exchanged hoops to close the quarter, the Bears held onto that lead (16-11).

Jones started the second quarter with a hoop that made it 18-11, but Northeastern scored 13 of the next 14 to take their first lead of the night. Gabby Griffin paced the run with six points while the Lady Eagles also got scores from Brea Godfrey and Cole as they surged ahead 24-19.

Hertford County, however, came right back with a 7-2 spurt of their own as they tied the game at 26-all. The Bears got hoops from Jones, Larinda Fennell and Futrell to tie the game.

Northeastern, however, had the final hop of the quarter – on a Nixon bucket – to take a 28-26 lead at the intermission.

Williams started the second half with a hoop, but was answered quickly by Nixon.

Williams, however, then hit a triple and a field goal back-to-back to give Hertford County a 32-30 edge.

Nixon scored two straight, but Jones came back with a pair of baskets of her own as the Lady Bears surged ahead 36-34.

Northeastern, however, then took control of the game with a 12-0 run that put them ahead 46-36 with 2:05 to play in the third quarter. Nixon started the spurt, but it was Griffin that led the way with six of the 12 points. Godfrey and Brandi Williams also scored on the run.

Hertford County was resilient, however, and closed the quarter on a 8-0 run of their own.

Burden had a free throw to start the spurt and then Jones and Futrell hit back-to-back buckets to make it 46-41. Bond then hit a three-pointer before the quarter closed to close the gap to 46-44.

The Lady Bears continued their run into the fourth quarter with Bond and Shelley Williams hitting back-to-back buckets to give them a 48-46 lead. Cole, however, buried a three-pointer to push Northeastern back ahead 49-48.

HCHS, however, rolled off five  unanswered to take a 53-49 lead. Burden hit a free throw that tied the game and the Jones had back-to-back hoops to establish the lead.

Northeastern then rolled off six of the next seven points as they took the lead 55-54.

Jones, however, had back-to-back hoops and then Burden did the same as the Bears used a minute and a half run to push ahead 62-55.

Northeastern got a pair of free throws from B. Williams to close within 62-57, but the Lady Bears sealed the win by hitting 6-of-8 at the line over the final minute  to secure the win.

HCHS now stands 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
