Two separate wrecks on US 258 that occurred within an hour of one another kept Hertford County emergency crews busy on Monday.

The more serious of the two mishaps occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. just north of Murfreesboro.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol First Sergeant Todd Lane of Troop A, District II, the single-vehicle accident sent Natasha Madison, 31, of Como to the hospital with serious injuries.

Madison, operating a 1995 Isuzu, was traveling south on 258 when her vehicle went off the right side of the roadway. Lane said at that time Madison overcorrected her vehicle and then ran off the right side of the road again. The vehicle then struck a ditch and overturned on its roof.

Lane said Madison was transported to Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital by Hertford County EMS with serious injuries and then to Norfolk General.

Madison was charged with driving with license revoked and reckless driving.

Just over an hour earlier, a three-vehicle accident on US 258 forced traffic to be rerouted just north of Como.

According to Lane, all three vehicles were traveling north on the highway when a 2011 Ford pickup truck operated by Frank Edwards, 43, of Smithfield, Va. slowed and stopped to make a left turn into a private driveway.

The vehicle behind Edwards, a 2007 Cadillac SUV driven by Larry Whitehead, 45, of Tarboro, slowed down and was struck by a 2001 Ford passenger vehicle operated by Tiffany Boyce, 29, of Woodland.

Whitehead’s SUV was then forced into Edward’s vehicle.

Lane said Boyce and her passenger, Larina Britt of Woodland, were transported by Hertford County EMS to Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital for minor injuries.

Boyce was charged with failure to reduce speed.
