Two separate accidents claimed the lives of motorists on Saturday in Hertford County.

On River Road near Cofield, a single vehicle crash led to the death of an Ahoskie man.

Trooper J.E. Coltrain of the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that Stacey R. Vaughan, age 44, lost his life in an accident that occurred shortly past 12 noon.

Coltrain said Vaughan was operating a 2012 Infinity passenger car westbound on River Road. Just before reaching the Perdue Road intersection, Vaughan’s vehicle traveled left of center in a curve, according to Coltrain.

The vehicle continued to the left, traveling off the roadway where it initially impacted a ditch before striking a driveway culvert. Coltrain said the impact with the culvert caused the vehicle to become airborne and overturn, causing Vaughan to be ejected.

Trooper Coltrain said Vaughan was not wearing a seatbelt. He died at the scene.

Exceeding the posted speed limit and failure to maintain lane control were listed in Coltrain’s report as contributing factors to the accident.

The other fatal accident in Hertford County occurred Saturday morning on NC 11 near its intersection with Millennium Road.

The report from that accident was not ready to be released.
