ASKEWVILLE – A single vehicle crash here Friday night ended tragically for a local man.

Meredith Pritchard Hoggard Jr., 62, of Windsor died after his 2008 Dodge pick up truck ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch and overturned, according to NC Highway Patrol Trooper J.C. Copeland who investigated the accident.

The crash occurred on Askewville Road (RP 1304) two-tenths of one mile east of the town’s corporate limits.

Trooper Copeland said that Hoggard was wearing a seat belt and was entrapped. The crash victim was freed from the wreckage by members of the Askewville Fire Department, but had already succumbed to his injuries.

“There was no clear indication at the scene to what might have caused this accident,” Copeland said. “For that reason, the cause is still under investigation.”

The fatal wreck was the sixth of 2017 in the NC Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Two of those fatalities have occurred in Bertie County.
