The Area-1 American Legion baseball season begins this week with several teams seeing action.

Ahoskie Post-102’s junior team will open their season tomorrow (Wednesday) with a 7 p.m. game at Hertford County High School baseball field against Albemarle of Elizabeth City.

David Ellis returns as coach with Post 102, replacing Jacob Harrell. This is Ellis’ first turn with the junior team after last coaching the senior team in 2014. Ellis will be assisted by Chuck Munford and Bryan Merritt. Wayne Meeks is the Post athletic director.

The junior team will play a 22 game schedule including home and away contests against the other 10 conference members of Area-1. The junior conference playoffs will be July 5-9 in Manteo with the state junior tournament July 15-17 in Swansboro.

Chris Towell returns to coach the Post 102 senior Legion team. They open their season May 28 with a doubleheader at home beginning at 4 p.m. at HCHS field against Rocky Mount Post 58.

Both Post 102 teams made the post-season in 2015.

Windsor Post 37 will not field a senior team in 2016, but athletic director Allen Castelloe and Coach Wayne Hill say they hope the Windsor seniors can return in 2017. Meanwhile, the Bobby Harmon-coached junior team, which made it all the way to the state playoffs last season, opens their 2016 season May 23 at Bertie High School field against Area-1’s newest team: Bear Grass.
