WINDSOR – Monday, Dec. 7 the Bertie County Board of Commissioners heard a very enlightening and exciting presentation from Jo Ann Jordan, the long-time Event Coordinator of the Relay for Life event of Bertie County.

During this presentation, Jordan reminded the Commissioners that Bertie County was the very first Relay for Life chapter in North Carolina, and since its founding 22 years ago they have raised over $3-million dollars in contributions for The American Cancer Society.

“In 2015 alone, Bertie County not only reached its donation goal, but it exceeded that goal by approximately $16,000,” Jordan said.

This accomplishment made the 2015 event a “purple” event which is one of the highest designations that the American Cancer Society can bestow on a single Relay for Life event.

In addition, Jordan had more good news for the Commissioners.

She further reported that Bertie County had the highest per capita donations in the South Atlantic Division equating to $11.77 per citizen.

Lastly, and most importantly, Jordan said Bertie received high marks for having the most survivor registrants in the northeastern North Carolina region.

“In light of these accomplishments and the upcoming holidays, it seems most appropriate to express our sincerest gratitude and thankfulness for all volunteers and participants who are responsible for organizing and hosting such an extraordinary event each year,” said Commission chairman John Trent.

“Additionally, Bertie County is fortunate to have such strong business partners who provide corporate sponsorship and support for Bertie County’s Relay for Life each year,” Trent added.

Even more so, Bertie County Relay for Life officials said they are thankful for the health and well-being of Bertie’s many cancer survivors and their families.

“We also want to remind each and every Bertie County citizen to give thanks for their health, as well as for the health of their family and friends during this festive and blessed time of year,” said Jordan.

The group anticipates another great year for the Relay for Life event and they look forward to seeing more and more survivors walking the track at Bertie High School’s Roy Bond, Jr. Stadium as they “stand up to cancer, and finish the fight”.
