AHOSKIE – Hertford County High School rolled to victory here Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears used the one-two punch of Camaryn Jones and Brandi Burden – each of whom scored 17 points – to rack up an easy 69-29 victory over First Flight High School.

The win boosted HCHS to 10-6 overall this season with a 5-2 mark inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

The Lady Bears wasted no time taking control of the game as Justin Frederes’  team jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Burden and Sherniece Futrell before Kirsten Murphy scored for First Flight.

The Lady Nighthawks didn’t score again until HCHS had mounted an 11-2 advantage. Vanessa Mitchell got the 7-0 run started with a three-pointer and was followed by hoops from Burden and Jones.

After First Flight hit four of the next six to close it to 13-6, the Bears closed out the first quarter with buckets by Futrell and Burden to lead handily (17-6) at the end of the first quarter.

That roll continued in the second quarter when the HCHS defense shut out First Flight while scoring 14 points of their own. Jones led the way with seven during the period while Mitchell added three and Futrell and Kayla Everette scored a hoop each.

The Bears led 31-6 at the intermission.

Hertford County was never seriously threatened in the second half as they went back-and-forth to open the third quarter but then rolled off 14 unanswered points and led 51-14 at the end of three quarters.

In addition to the 17 each from Jones and Burden, the Lady Bears got 14 from Futrell and eight from Mitchell. Brianna Joyner checked in with five points and Everette added four. Desiree James and Bayley Nicholas had two each.

The Lady Nighthawks were paced by Allie Nolton with 10 points, Amber King with nine and Murphy with eight. Gigi Ramirez added two points.
