AHOSKIE – Hertford County High School placed four in double figures.

That was enough to easily lead the Bears to a Northeastern Coastal Conference win over First Flight Tuesday. The Bears won 79-47.

Shabazz Atkins led the way for HCHS with 16 points while Jquwan Ruffin checked in with 14 points and Dwight Vaughan had an even dozen. Brian Beale was also in double digits with 10 points.

William Davenport led First Flight with 11.

The Nighthawks got the game’s first score with a triple off the hands of Matt Conway, but the Bears roared back when Ruffin scored seven unanswered, one of which was a three-pointer, to give the Bears a 7-3 lead. They never relinquished the advantage again.

First Flight got a free throw and hoop from Davenport, but the Bears answered with an Atkins triple. Jarrett Sexton then rolled off four straight of his own to make it 14-6.

First Flight closed to within four on hoops by Davenport and Billy Austin, but Ruffin scored again from behind the arc to put the Bears ahead 17-10 after one quarter.

HCHS added to that advantage in the second period when they went on an 11-2 run. Beale, Atkins, Willie Bass and Sexton all scored during the spurt as Hertford County grabbed a 28-12 lead.

Davenport stopped the run with a hoop for First Flight, but Beale hit back-to-back buckets and then Vaughan buried consecutive three-pointers to push the Hertford County lead to 38-14.

First Flight closed to within 38-18 by the intermission.

The Bears never let the Nighthawks back into the contest and pulled away even further for the 32-point victory.

In addition to those in double figures, the Bears got seven from Wayne Simmons, six from Jarrett and five each from Bass and Kevin Privott. Maurice Earley added four points.

The victory boosted Hertford County’s overall record to 14-3 and kept the Bears undefeated in Northeastern Coastal Conference play with a spotless 7-0 mark.
