Lady Bears roll past NH

CREEKSVILLE – The Lady Bears pulled even Tuesday.
Hertford County High School’s varsity girls put four players in double digits and evened its record at 4-4 Tuesday with a 74-22 victory over Northampton County High School – East.
Brandi Burden scored 22 points, Camaryn Jones added 18 and Sherniece Futrell and Desiree James scored 10 points each. Ananase Joyner paced the Rams with seven points.
Hertford County scored the first six points of the game on buckets from Jones, Vanessa Mitchell and Futrell.
Northampton, however, rolled off the next eight unanswered to surge ahead. Alexis Shoulders buried a three-pointer before Joyner scored from the free throw line. After another bucket, Joyner put the Rams ahead 8-6.
Unfortunately for the home team, it was the last basket of the quarter. Hertford County, meanwhile, rolled off 10 unanswered to lead 16-8 after one quarter.
Burden hit two free throws and a hoop while Jones, James and Futrell each scored from the floor.
Burden opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws before Futrell’s score made it 20-8 in favor of the Bears.
Imane Shoulders stopped the spurt with a free throw, but HCHS rolled off six more in a row thanks to hoops from Mitchell, Jones and James as they pushed their lead to 26-9.
Northampton scored three of the next five, but the Bears came back with 11 unanswered and took a 39-12 lead into the locker room.
The Bears continued to pull away as the third quarter opened as they scored the first six in a row to take it to 45-12. The Bears led 60-18 by the end of the quarter.
In addition to those in double figures, the Bears got six from Mitchell, four from Kayla Everette and two each from Bayley Nicholas and Brianna Joyner.
Following Joyner’s scoring for the Rams, A. Shoulders had six, Anderson five and Sasha Bowser had two points. I. Shoulders and Dejanique Daye had one each.
The win for HCHS came after they scored a 76-53 Northeastern Coastal Conference win over First Flight Friday.
In that contest, the Lady Bears scored 23 each in the first and second quarters en route to the victory.
Jones led the Bears with 25 points and 10 steals, recording one of three double-doubles for the Bears. Futrell added 20 points and 10 boards while Burden had 18 points and 12 assists.
Mitchell had six points for HCHS, Everette five and Dalisha Speight two points.
