WINDSOR – First Flight High School edged Hertford County 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel here Monday afternoon.

The Nighthawks sent Chance DeCharm to the mound while the Bears countered with Brandon Warren. Both pitchers had excellent outings, but it was the Nighthawks that were able to come away with the win in pool play for the Bertie Easter Tournament.

The game was tied at zero through two innings.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Nighthawks loaded the bases with one out. Warren, however, struck out the next two batters to pitch his way out of a jam.

The game then stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when First Flight pushed across two marks to take a 2-0 edge.

The Bears only had one hit in the first six innings, that coming when Warren laced a two-out single in the top of the fourth frame.

The top of the seventh saw Hertford County get on the board.

Daniel Merritt and Warren had back-to-back singles. Merritt went to third on a Tucker Warren sacrifice fly and then scored on a Tyler Pryor RBI-single to right.

Mitchell Godwin had an infield single to load the bases, but a double play ended the game.

Warren went all six innings for the Bears, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

The Bears had five hits, let by two from Warren. Merritt, Pryor and Godwin had one hit each.

The loss dropped HCHS to 11-6.
