HCHS blanks Rams

AHOSKIE – Hertford County claimed a shutout victory over visiting Northampton County High School – East here Wednesday.

Mitchell Godwin and Tyler Burden combined to pitch the one-hit shutout as HCHS improved to 2-0 for the season with a 10-0 non-conference baseball win.

HCHS opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the first frame.

Burden walked as did Marvin Harrell and then Brandon Warren was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Burden came around to score on a Tucker Warren RBI-fielder’s choice to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Rams put together their only threat of the game in the top of the third inning.

Matt Holloman reached on an error with two out before Trayvon Daye and Daniel Davis drew walks to load the bases.

Godwin then recorded a strikeout to end the inning and the Northampton-East threat.

Hertford County responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Burden led off the inning with an inside the park homerun to put HCHS ahead 2-0.

Daniel Merritt then singled to center and scored on Brandon Warren’s RBI-double to right-centerfield. Brandon Warren scored when Tucker Warren reached on a two-base error.

Tucker Warren then raced home on a Tyler Pryor RBI-single to left. Pryor moved to third on a Godwin double and scored on a Brandon Taylor RBI-groundout as the Bears grabbed a 6-0 lead.

Hertford County added four more in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Burden singled to center, stole second and third and then recorded a steal of home to make it 7-0.

Harrell walked, Merritt reached on an error and Brandon Warren drew a free pass to load the bases for the Bears. Harrell and Merritt scored on a Tucker Warren single to left. Brandon Warren then stole third and scored on a Quinton Askew RBI-single to give HCHS a 10-0 lead.

Godwin pitched four innings for HCHS allowing no runs on one hit while striking out 10. Burden then tossed one inning allowing no runs, no hits and striking out three.

The Bears had eight hits during the outing led by Burden’s two. Tucker Warren had a hit and three RBIs while Brandon Warren, Merritt, Pryor, Godwin and Askew had one hit each.

Austin Watkins had the lone hit for the Rams.

Hertford County (2-0) played at Gates County on Friday. They will be back in action Monday when they travel to SouthWest Edgecombe. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
