ELIZABETH CITY – It was all Hertford County all the time.

Wednesday night, the Bears rolled to the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament finals with a 62-30 victory over Pasquotank County High School.

Jordan Jones paced the HCHS attack 23 points while Dontez Tyler added 13 and Petey Boone chipped in 10.

Kyle Odum led Pasquotank’s balanced attack with seven points.

The Panthers got the first score of the game, but Hertford County responded with nine straight.

Boone led the spurt with five points while Tyler and Jones had a bucket each as the Bears jumped ahead 9-2.

Odum then hit back-to-back scores to close the gap to 9-6, but the Panthers would never get closer.

Tyler hit two free throws followed by three scores in a row for Jones, the last of which was a three-point play. Shelton Simmons then hit a bucket to give the Bears a 20-6 lead.

Hertford County continued to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 9-2 to start the period. Jestin Thompson led the spurt with five points while Jones added two.

Pasquotank then scored three in a row, but Tyler and Jones ended the first half with back-to-back buckets as Hertford County took a 33-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third period was more of the same. Tyler scored the first three points of the second half and then, following a Edrian Mullen hoop for the Panthers, Jones scored six straight followed by a Tyler hoop that made it 46-15 with 3:01 to play in the quarter.

PCHS had six straight points after that, but Jones scored a hoop to end the third quarter with the Bears ahead 48-21.

Hertford County outscored the Panthers 14-9 in the final quarter as they cruised to the 30-point win.

In addition to those in double figures, Thompson had eight while D’Isaac Jordan and Quenton Lashley had three points each. Simmons added two.

The win gave the Bears a 19-4 overall record heading into last night’s (Friday) Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament championship game.
