HCHS sweeps Currituck

CURRITUCK – Hertford County High School swept a pair of varsity outings here Friday.

The varsity boys of HCHS rolled 79-25 over Currituck County High School while the Lady Bears scored a 53-22 win over the same school.

In the varsity boys contest, HCHS jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Bears led 39-13 at the intermission and 64-22 after three quarters.

Jordan Jones led the way with 16 points for the Bears followed closely by 15 points from Petey Boone and 13 by Dontez Tyler.

Jeston Thompson added eight for the Bears while Shabazz Atkins had six, D’Isaac Jordan had five and Dekimis Perry and Shelton Simmons each contributed four. Rounding out the scoring were Dwight Vaughan (3), Quinton Lashley (3) and Jarrett Sexton (2).

Juwan Harvey led Currituck with nine points.

“It was a good overall team effort,” HCHS basketball boss Charles Simmons said. “We ran our half court sets extremely well.”

HCHS moved to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference with the win.

The Lady Bears didn’t get off to as big a lead as their male counterparts, but easily rolled in the second half.

The game was tied at 9-all after one quarter, but the Lady Bears took a 31-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the HCHS defense held its opponents to seven total points (four in the third, three in the fourth) while scoring 22 of their own to take the victory.

Briante Bond led the Lady Bears with 16 points while Camaryn Jones had nine and Brandi Burden chipped in eight. Sherniece Futrell and Casey Grant had six each while Takia Williams chipped in four. Rounding out the scoring were Somalia Bond and Dyoni Hall with two points each.

“This was a great road win for us,” HCHS skipper Justin Frederes said.

The Lady Bears improved to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the league with the victory.
