AHOSKIE – Hertford County burst out of the gate here Tuesday.

The Lady Bears scored the first 10 points and never looked back as they rolled past Northeastern Coastal Conference rival First Flight by a final of 59-30.

Camaryn Jones and Sherniece Futrell tied for top scoring honors with 14 points each while Briante Bond added an even dozen and Brandi Burden chipped in 11.

Katie Lamont led the Lady Nighthawks with seven points.

The contest itself, however, was never in doubt.

Jones hit the first hoop and was followed quickly by a bucket from Futrell and one from Bond. Futrell then hit a basket and two free throws to stake HCHS to a 10-0 lead.

Bond and Takia Williams each added a three-pointer after that as the Lady Bears led 16-8 after one quarter.

Bryce Sanders got the first bucket of the second quarter for the Nighthawks, but Williams buried a triple and Burden had two free throws as HCHS pulled ahead 21-10.

After a First Flight free throw, the Bears rolled off five straight thanks to a bucket each by Jones and Burden and a Bond free throw to surge ahead 26-11.

HCHS wasn’t done, however, as they went on a 7-2 spurt later in the quarter that pushed the lead to 33-15. They held a 25-18 advantage at the intermission.

Jones started the third quarter with back-to-back hoops and then, following a Lamont score, Burden did the same as Hertford County took a 43-20 lead.

The Lady Bears were up 46-27 by the end of the third quarter and then dominated the final period. HCHS outscored their opponents 13-3 in the final quarter as they rolled to the easy 29-point win.

In addition to those in double figures, Williams scored six for the Bears and Dyani Hall added two points.

The win boosted the Lady Bears to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference, good for second place in the league.

Hertford County will be back in action Friday when they travel to Elizabeth City for a rematch with Northeastern.
