Hertford County High School recorded a pair of varsity basketball wins Friday and Saturday.

The Bears traveled to Edenton Friday and claimed a Northeastern Coastal Conference victory over the Aces by a final of 73-60. A night later, HCHS went to Creeksville where they scored a 59-45 win over Northampton County High School – East.

Friday the Bears got off to a slow start, scoring just eight points in the first quarter, but tallied 20 in the second period to take a 28-17 halftime edge. The Aces closed the gap to 38-31 after three quarters, but the Bears controlled the final period to claim the win.

“Edenton is a difficult place to play,” Bears’ basketball boss Charles Simmons said. “It was a good conference win.”

Dontez Tyler paced the Bears with 19 points while Petey Boone was just behind with 18 and Jordan Jones chipped in 13. Dekimis Perry added seven and D’Isaac Jordan added two points.

DeZure Nixon and Jamez Moore had 11 each to lead Edenton.

A night later, the Bears went to Northampton-East where the Rams were able to grab an early advantage, but the Bears came back for the win.

“Northampton-East was ready to play,” Simmons said. “We did not match their intensity in the first half. We played better as a team and made the plays when we had to.”

The Rams led 16-15 after one quarter and held a 25-23 edge at the intermission, but HCHS grabbed a 44-40 lead after three quarters and went on to the 13-point win.

Jordan Jones poured in 26 points during the win while Petey Boone and Dontez Tyler had 15 points each. Shabazz Atkins added eight and Dekimis Perry had seven. Wayne Simmons added two points.

The Rams were led by 21 from Jamar Williams while Christopher Bishop had 16. Trevon Daye and Grant Evans scored 10 points each. LaShawn Pitman and Kyshawn Gaskins had two each.

The wins helped Hertford County improve to 4-1 overall this season and 1-0 in the conference.
