Lady Bears stop East

AHOSKIE – The Lady Bears of Hertford County High School claimed victory number one during the 2010-11 basketball season here Friday.

HCHS downed non-conference foe Northampton County High School – East 64-34 thanks to a trio of Lady Bears in double figures. That group was led by Brandi Burden’s 25 points while Briante Bond added 13 and Sherniece Futrell chipped in 12.

Patrice Williams led Northampton-East with 17 points while Dajenique Day added 13 points.

Northampton-East actually took the lead out of the gate, getting six quick points from Daye and two from Williams as they claimed an 8-5 advantage early on.

Hertford County roared back, however, was they closed the first quarter on an 11-3 run.

Futrell started the spurt with her hoop which was followed by a Burden free throw and a score from Camryn Jones. Burden then tacked on three points before Takia Williams buried a three-pointer that made it 16-11 after one quarter.

Patrice Williams scored from the free throw line to open the second quarter and then Day recorded a field goal to close the gap two just a pair (16-14).The teams exchanged hoops until back-to-back buckets by Jomecka Deloatch tied the game at 20-all.

The Lady Bears pushed back ahead, but a three-pointer from Daye closed the gap to 25-24 late in the first half.

Burden, however, scored from the field and the free throw line to give HCHS a 28-24 edge at the intermission.

The third quarter started with the Bears opening up on an 8-0 run. Futrell had six of the eight points and Jones added the other two as the Lady Bears pushed ahead 36-24.

Williams stopped the run with a free throw, but Burden had a three-point play moments later that gave HCHS a 39-25 lead with 4:05 to play in the quarter.

Northampton closed within 43-32 by the end of the period, but the fourth quarter started like the third – with the Lady Bears on a run. HCHS scored the first 13 points of the period to go ahead 56-32 with 4:29 to play in the game.

Futrell and Burden each scored twice on the spurt while Bond added a hoop and Takia Williams another three-pointer.

Patrice Wiliams finally ended the spurt with a field goal, but it was the only bucket of the quarter for the Rams.

Hertford County improved to 1-1 with the victory. The Lady Bears will travel to South Central tonight (Tuesday) for another non-conference outing.

Northampton-East, meanwhile, will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Roanoke Rapids for a girls-only contest.
