Veverker is Bertie’s top teacher

WINDSOR – Bertie County Schools recently honored its 2010-11 Teachers of the Year.
At the October meeting of the Bertie County Board of Education, Public Information Office Brent Todd introduced the 10 teachers who were honored by their schools and then announced the overall Teacher of the Year for the district.
“As I’ve spent the past 14 years not in the classroom, but as an observer of the educational process, I’ve come to realize like many of you that the single most important ingredient in a child’s education stands before them in the front of the classroom: the teacher,” Todd said.

The PIO then shared a pair of quotes about teachers. The first is of unknown origin and was “Teachers teach more by what they are than by what they say.”
The second quote Todd shared was from Rudyard Kipling.
“No printed work, nor spoken pleas, can teach young minds what they should be,” Kipling said. “Not all the books on the shelves but what the teachers are themselves.”
The district’s top honor went to Jennifer Veverker of the Bertie High School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Veverker teaches ninth grade science and engineering at the school.
The other high school Teachers of the Year included Fannie Pugh, an Algebra teacher at the Bertie Prep High School and Stephanie Perry, who teaches Biology and AP Biology at Bertie High School. Gwendolyn Hughson was named Teacher of the Year at the Bertie Early College High School where she teaches Mathematics.
The Bertie Middle School Teacher of the Year was Nancy Brittenham. She instructs middle school grades in science.
Bertie Academy also named a Teacher of the Year. Chosen was Heather Lewis who teaches six through twelfth grade social studies.
At the elementary school level, Terri Cheatham was selected as Teacher of the Year at Aulander Elementary School where she instructs third graders.
Colerain Elementary School chose Regina Lee, who teaches fifth grade, while West Bertie Elementary selected Lisa Pittman, also a fifth grade teacher.
Also named as Teacher of the Year was Windsor Elementary School’s Sandra Bond. She teaches the fourth grade at the school.
Each of the teachers was presented a certificate in honor of their selection and the board members gave them a standing ovation.
“We’re proud of you and the work you do,” Board Chair Gloria Lee said.
