EDENTON – Hertford County put the brakes on their football skid here Tuesday.

The Bears got four touchdowns from senior quarterback Petey Boone and rolled over Edenton 44-6 in a Northeastern Coastal Conference contest.

HCHS took less than two minutes to get things going as they scored on the third play from scrimmage to take a lead from which they never looked back.

On play one, Neil Outlaw raced 40 yards down to the Edenton 13-yardline. It took just two play before the Bears scored coming on a six-yard scamper by Boone. Brandon Warren added the PAT to make it 7-0 with 10:35 still to play in the first quarter.

The Aces responded with a 15-play drive in which they moved the football into the redzone and down to the Bears’ 11-yardline.

Facing fourth-and-seven, however, the Aces couldn’t convert when D’Isaac Jordan pulled Edenton quarterback Tyler Rinehold down for a 14-yard loss.

The Bears couldn’t do anything with the football, however, and punted it back to the Aces. The same was the fate of Edenton, however, and the Bears got the football back at their own 34-yardline.

Hertford County picked up 18 yards on the first four plays, but then Boone found Justin Watson for a 47-yard gain down to the one-yardline. After Aaron Thomas was stopped in his backfield on the next play, Boone went three yards for the score. Warren again tacked on the extra point and the Bears led 14-0 with 8:32 to play in the second quarter.

After an exchange of possessions, it appeared the Bears would go into the locker room with the two touchdown cushion, but the first half scoring wasn’t actually over.

HCHS stopped the Aces on fourth down at their own 40-yardline with less than a minute to play. The Bears, however, made the most of that time as Boone went 60 yards on the next play and scored with 10 seconds remaining in the first half.

Warren’s PAT gave the Bears a 21-0 lead at the intermission.

Edenton finally got on the board early in the third quarter.

After taking the kickoff to open the second half, the Aces marched 80 yards on nine plays to get into the endzone. Tyquan Flemming had the scoring run on a three-yard jaunt. The two-point conversion failed and the Bears held on to a 21-6 lead.

Hertford County fumbled on its next possession, but the Aces couldn’t move the football and turned it over own downs at the HCHS 30-yardline.

The Bears used seven plays to cover the 70 yards with Bone scampering for 48 of those yards and throwing for 11 more. His 11-yard pass was a touchdown to Watson at the 3:35 mark of the third quarter.

The kick failed, but HCHS led 27-6.

After forcing the Eagles to turn the ball over with a fumble at the Aces 12-yardline, the Bears quickly scored again when Warren connected on a 26-yard field goal to make it 30-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Another Edenton fumble on the next drive gave HCHS possession on the Aces 17-yardline. A loss on first down was quickly made up when Devin Vaughan raced 19 yards to paydirt. Backup kicker Ansley Lassiter booted the extra point and the Bears led 37-6 with 9:41 to pay.

The final score of the night for HCHS came when Thomas went four yards to cap a six-play22-yard drive. Lassiter again added the conversion kick and the Bears grabbed their 44-6 lead.

HCHS got the ball back at midfield near the end of the contest and drove to the 10-yardline before backup quarterback Dorrien Askew took two knees to end the game.

Overall, Hertford County had 374 yards of total offense, 222 of which were accounted for by Boone. The senior QB had 151 yards rushing and 71 yards passing.

Outlaw gained 62 yards on eight carries for the Bears.

Edenton had 229 yards, all of which came on the ground. Deshon Flemming led the Aces with 98 yards on six carries.
