WINDSOR – A month after rejecting both bids for Council on Aging food service, Bertie County has a new vendor.

Monday morning, the Bertie County Commissioners formally accepted the lowest – and only – bidder for the food service contract.

Trump’s Restaurant in Plymouth was awarded the contract with a bid of $4.75 per meal.

Trump’s was one of two vendors who originally submitted a bid form to the Bertie County Council on Aging. In April, Trump’s submitted a bid of $4.85 per meal while Granville Caters in Windsor offered a bid of $4.75 per meal.

The commissioners, however, rejected both bids after it became apparent that neither had returned a complete bid form. Commissioner Rick Harrell moved to reject both bids and re-advertise and it passed by a unanimous vote.

On Monday, commissioners questioned the lack of a bid from Granville Cater’s.

“This is the only bid we have,” Commission Chairman Norman M. Cherry Sr. told the board.

Commissioner J. Wallace Perry asked why Granville had not submitted another bid., citing the Trump’s proposal.

“Is there a reason,” he asked.

Cherry said he had spoken with their representatives and was told that based on the cost, the owners saw very little profit, but didn’t go into detail.

Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb pointed out that Trump’s had dropped their price 10 cents per meal and matched the low bid Granville submitted in April.

Commissioner Charles Smith moved to accept the bid provided by Trump’s Restaurant with Perry offering a second. It passed by a unanimous vote.
