WINDSOR – Bertie and Martin County officials have been led to the Roanoke River in their search for a missing Williamston man.

According to Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins, law enforcement officials were given information that led them to use sonar to search the base of the river and a location at the end of Grabtown Road near Quitnsa Road proved productive.

“We have located two and maybe three cars in the river,” Sheriff Atkins said.

The Sidney Dive Team was called in to search. Thus far they have helped law enforcement officers recover one vehicle, but it has no relation to the case.

“We have brought up one car that was stolen out of Greenville a year ago, but we don’t believe it has anything to do with this case,” Atkins said.

The search was stopped approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening and was set to resume today (Thursday) if weather permitted.

“The current is rough and the divers are having trouble,” the sheriff reported. “We will make sure it’s safe tomorrow before we resume.”

Officials are searching for Derrick “Guy” Spruill, 38, of Williamston. He has been missing since February 20. Law enforcement officers have called his disappearance suspicious.
