Primary election filing opens Dec. 1

The filing period for the March 2016 Primary Election opens at 12 noon on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Those wishing to file for any of the seats available during this election cycle can do so by visiting the Board of Elections office in your county of residence. Those offices are open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The filing period for this election cycle ends at 12 noon on Monday, Dec. 21.

Seats open for this cycle include:

Bertie County

Bertie County Register of Deeds (currently held by Annie Wilson);

Bertie County Commissioner District 1 (currently held by Ron Wesson of Windsor); and

Bertie County Commissioner District 4 (currently held by John Trent of Lewiston-Woodville).

 

Gates County

Gates County Register of Deeds (currently held by Cathy Horton);

Gates County Board of Commissioners – Hobbsville District (currently held by Linda Hofler);

Gates County Board of Commissioners – Sunbury District (currently held by Henry Jordan);

Gates County Board of Education – Eure District (currently held by Ray Felton); and

Gates County Board of Education – Corapeake District (currently held by Claire Whitehurst).

 

Hertford County

Register of Deeds (currently held by Melanie Storey);

County Commissioner District 1 (currently held by Gary Lewter);

County Commissioner District 2 (currently held by Ronald Gatling); and

County Commissioner District 3 (currently held by Bill Mitchell).

 

Northampton County

Register of Deeds (currently held by Robin Williams);

Board of Commissioners – District 1 (currently held by Joe Barrett);

Board of Commissioners – District 2 (currently held by Virginia Spruill;

Four seats on the Board of Education (currently held by Clint Williams, Marjorie Edwards, Keedra Whitaker, and Phil Matthews); and

One seat on the Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors (currently held by William Stephenson).

NC General Assembly

Additionally, seats in the North Carolina General Assembly that represent R-C area counties are open during the 2016 election cycle.

In the NC House of Representatives, the District 5 seat currently held by Howard Hunter III will be on the ballot. District 5 includes Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties. The District 27 seat, now held by Michael Wray who represents Northampton and Halifax counties, is also part of the Primary election.

In the NC Senate, the seats currently held by Erica Smith-Ingram (District 3 to include Bertie, Hertford and Northampton) and Bill Cook (District 1, to include Gates) are open during the 2016 election cycle.

The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

The deadline to register to vote in the Primary is 25 days prior to that election.
