Lady Bears roll

AHOSKIE – Putting six players in double figures usually means a victory.

That’s exactly what it meant Friday night when Hertford County High School had six Lady Bears score 10 or more points as they routed visiting Northampton County High School 92-16.

Brandi Burden led the way for the Lady Bears with 18 points while Vanessa Mitchell and Desiree James scored 16 each. Kyara Rodgers added 14 while Dyani Hall and Talisha Speight added 10 each.

In addition to those, Dalisha Speight had four and Bailey Nicholas did as well.

Chornita Butcher paced Northampton with 12 points.

Hertford County put the game away early, rolling off 11 unanswered points after leading 4-3.James had six of those 11 points while Mitchell had the other four.

Butcher started the second quarter with a hoop, but Mitchell buried a three-pointer followed by a hoop from Nicholas and a three-point play by Burden that made it 23-5.

Ananasa Joyner had a free throw for Northampton, but HCHS then rolled off 16 straight points to close out the first half with a 39-6 lead.

The Lady Bears continued to pour it on as the third quarter started, scoring the first 13 points to increase their bulge to 52-6.

Butcher hit a three-pointer for the Lady Jaguars, but Burden had four straight points followed by the same from T. Speight as Hertford County pulled away to a 60-9 lead.

Another Butcher triple was followed by 10 unanswered from the Lady Bears as they closed the third quarter with a 70-12 lead.

Despite the lop-sided score, the Lady Bears didn’t stop. They outscored Northampton 22-4 in the final quarter to establish the final margin.

The win was the second of the season for the Lady Bears against four losses. They will be back in action Tuesday (tonight) at home where they will open Northeastern Coastal Conference play against Northeastern High School.
