Georgia Holley

MERRY HILL – Georgia Holley, 60, died November 27, 2003, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Alice Nichols

MERRY HILL – Alice Nichols, 86, died November 28, 2003,at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Burial was in Ashland Baptist Church Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Walter R. Hardy

HAMPTON, Va. – Walter Raleigh Hardy, 51, a native of Bertie County, died November 27, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kelford Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Walton. Burial will be in the Hoggard family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Hardy was a supervisor with Newport News Shipyard and a member of Royal Lodge #471, Kelford and a member of Kelford Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Ruffin Hardy; a son, Walter Jermaine Hardy of Hampton; his mother, Jannie Hardy of Kelford; one brother, James Hardy of Greenville; and three sisters, Valerie Galberath of Greenville, Faith N. Green of Kelford and Florence Jackson of Windsor.

Ephraim Mills

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Ephraim Mills, 85, died November 28, 2003 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Quankey Baptist Church by Bishop Willard R. Johnson Jr. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret Fennell

CHESAPEAKE, VA. – Margaret Irene Cooper Fennell died November 28, 2003, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Jake Manley. Inurnment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Burrus of Chicago, Ill. and Sheryl Brown of Norfolk; a son, Alonzo Mourning Sr. of Chesapeake; five sisters, Bernice Cooper and Lorraine Cooper, both of Ahoskie, Priscilla Cooper of Birmingham, Ala., Mary Marsh of Norfolk and Shahidah Majaid of New York City; three brothers, Collie Cooper Jr. of Chesapeake, Ronald Cooper of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Lorenzo Cooper of Ahoskie; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Maggie S. Banks

NORFOLK, Va. – Pastor Maggie Collins Shambley Banks, 93, a native of Harrellsville, died November 22, 2003. She was the widow of John Banks.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Rose of Sharon Revival Center, 523 W. 35th St., Norfolk, by Pastor Clara Israel. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Pastor Banks was a former member of Harrellsville Baptist Church and Holy Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, David Shambley; one daughter, Elder Bernice S. Vinson; one adopted son, Michael Banks Sr.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Thelma L. Knight

SUFFOLK, Va. – Thelma Lee Knight, 77, a native of Gates County, died November 22, 2003, in Obici Hospital. She was the widow of Johnnie Knight Sr.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church Corapeake, by Dr. Claude M. Odom. Interment was in the church cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, was in charge.

She was a member of New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Copeland of Suffolk and Margie Bonner of Portsmouth; two sons, Herman Jenkins of Chesapeake and Johnnie Knight Jr. of Suffolk; two sisters, Gladys Rodgers of Suffolk and Annie Pruden of Richmond; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Carroll A. Davis

WINSTON-SALEM – Carroll Ashton Davis, a native of Elizabeth City, died November 24, 2003.

A memorial service will be held at the family farm on 1614 Soundneck Road, Elizabeth City, North Carolina on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 2 p.m.

Survivors include his former wife, Jacquelyne Anderson Davis of Winston-Salem; daughter, Ruth Davis Proctor of Chapel Hill; son, Stephen Ashton Davis of Apex; daughter, Laura Ashton Davis of Chapel Hill; two grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret &uot;Peggy&uot; Gaskins Simons of Elizabeth City.

Dorothy M. Johnson

WINDSOR – Dorothy Mae Johnson, a native of Woodville, died November 21, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial was in Weeping Mary Church Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, William Jr. and Victor Johnson; 17 sisters and brothers, Daisy Holley of Lewiston, Shirley, Daisy and Rudolph Johnson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gertrude Pugh of Clinton, Md., Alice Johnson of Olney, Frank Johnson Jr. of Adelphi, Vinnie Mae and Lizzie Mohammad of Washington, D.C., Ames and Charles of Ahoskie, Bonnie Jean Sutton of Detroit, Mich., Roger Johnson of Lewiston, Viola, Pamela and McCoy, all of Newport News.

Welford V. Allen

WINDSOR – Welford Vincent Allen, a native of Bertie County, died November 22, 2003 at Atlantic City Medical Center, Pomona.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. Teresa Smallwood.

Survivors include five adopted children, Diane Robertson, Stephanie Robertson, Esther Robertson, Ethel Robertson and Clarence Robertson; and six sisters, Rosa Mae Nelson and Doretha Overton, both of Alexandria, Va., Louise Garrett of Hampton, Addie Powell of Nyack, Alice Wilson and Lillian Gray, both of Windsor.

William Ward

WINDSOR – William Rudolph Ward, 62, a native of Bertie County, died November 30, 2003, in his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Outreach Ministry by the Rev. J.R. Thomas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor.

Ward was a retired mechanic, and a member of the R&B Cook Club. He was also a member of United Outreach Ministry.

Survivors include a son, Horace V. Ward of Potecasi; a daughter, Denise W. Mizelle of Ahoskie; two sisters, Barbara Reed of Whitakers and Ellen Bell of Ahoskie; and three brothers, Cola Ward of Windsor, Richard Ward of Hassle and Eugene Ward of Elizabeth City.

Warness Outlaw

HAMPTON, Va. – Warness Outlaw, 52, a native of Hertford County, died November 26, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Mazel Futrell. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Outlaw was employed with Newport News Redeveloping Housing Authority.

Survivors include his wife, Denise Outlaw; five daughters, Dionne Parker of Hampton, Romanna Bowser of Aulander, Juanita Nelson, Sherry Outlaw and Monique Outlaw, all of Newport News; four brothers, Joe Outlaw of Bronx, N.Y., Mack Outlaw of New Jersey, Jerome Outlaw and Andy Outlaw, both of Ahoskie; two sisters, Mary Peterson of Ahoskie and Lillie Outlaw of Newport News; and 16 grandchildren.

Jessie M. Curry

AYDEN – Jessie Mitchell Curry, 92, a native of Ahoskie, died November 25, 2003, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

A memorial service will take place in Ayden. Final plans have not yet been made. The family would like to ask that in lieu of sending flowers, donations may be made to the Ayden United Methodist Church, 309 West 3RD Street, Ayden, NC 28513.

Mrs. Curry was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College and was active in the United Methodist Church as well as various book clubs and bridge clubs.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Little of Purcellville, Va.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
