Evelyn V. Brown

NORFOLK, Va. – Evelyn Vaughan Brown, 80, a native of Aulander, died March 21, 2004, in a local hospital. She was the widow of William Brown.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SEVAMP Senior Citizens or the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Brown graduated from Aulander High School and later attended business school in Ahoskie, Evelyn was a member of the Sherwood Forest Garden Club and Norview United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Lawrence; a son, William Brown Jr.; a brother, William Vaughan; and a granddaughter.

Jean Beasley-Cherry

BRONX, N.Y. – Jean L. Beasley-Cherry, a native of Bertie County, died March 11, 2004 at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Bronx.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Burial was in the Beasley family cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Mrs. Cherry was employed by the City of New York as a school crossing guard for 10 years.

Survivors include her husband, James M. Cherry of Bronx; her children, Larry G. Beasley of Union, N.J., Myron W. Cherry of Trumbull, Conn., Kevin M. Cherry of Bronx, Dwight Cherry of Capital Heights, Md. and Demetria Cherry of Manhattan; and 12 grandchildren.

Thomas P. Parker

AHOSKIE – Thomas P. Parker, 91, a native of Northampton County, died March 20, 2004, at his home.

A graveside service will be private. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Parker was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Wiggins Parker; his daughters, Genie P. Parker of Ahoskie and Ellen P. Rogers of Raleigh; a sister, Edith Parker Vinson of Murfreesboro; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Fannie Fite

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Fannie Dunston Hux Fite, 84, a native of Halifax County, died March 21, 2004, at Halifax Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of Floyd Hux and Henry Fite.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by Minister C. Dale Morris. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Fite was retired from J.P. Stevens and Co. and a member of New Testament Christian Church.

Survivors include four sons, Robert L. Hux of Westminster, Md., Fredrick T. Hux of Gaston, Larry R. Hux of Roanoke Rapids and David W. Hux of Gaston; five daughters, Margaret H. Norton of Roanoke Rapids, Priscilla H. Davis of Gaston, Frances H. Merritt of Shreveport, La., Rebecca H. Seuis of Gaston and Laura H. Anderton of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six sisters, Edna D. Bailey of Weldon, Dorothy D. Malone, Mable D. White, Bernice D. Hux and Helen D. Letchworth, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Linda C. Ross of Rocky Mount; 27 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

Gene W. Copeland

YALE – Gene Wayne Copeland, 57, a native of Suffolk, Va., died March 22, 2004, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, Yale. In lieu of flowers; the family suggests a living plant or tree be given to be placed on the property he so loved. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Copeland was a correction officer with the Virginia prison farm in Capron and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Ronda Samples Copeland; four daughters, Tammy LaRue of Windsor, Mona Frady of Carrsville, Heather Copeland of Waverly and Kimberly Taylor of Rocky Mount; two sons, Gene W. Copeland Jr. of Yale and Mack Copeland of Edenton; a sister, Dianne Alexander of Kings Mountain; five brothers, Valand Copeland Jr. of Chesapeake, Jimmie Copeland of Carrsville, Joey Copeland of Suffolk, David Copeland of Fayetteville and Chris Copeland of Norfolk; and 10 grandchildren.

Louise W. Denson

FRANKLIN, Va. – Deaconess Louise Whitfield Denson, a native of Southampton County, died March 19, 2004.

A service celebrating her life was conducted Wednesday at Mars Hill Baptist Church, 20315 Cary’s Bridge Road, Capron, Va., with Pastor A.L. Felton. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., was in charge.

Mrs. Denson was a homemaker, a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church where she served on the Deaconess Board, Senior Choir and was president of the Missionary Circle.

Survivors include her husband, William Fred Denson; two daughters, Carolyn Denson of Courtland and Lena Denson of Franklin; two sons, the Rev. William F. Denson Jr. of Ahoskie and Earl N. Denson of Conway; three sisters, two brothers; and eight grandchildren.

William M. Lee

AULANDER – William McKinley Lee, 66, a native of Hertford County, died March 22, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Chapel. Burial was in Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

Lee was a retired sanitation worker in New York.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Sanchez Lee; sons, Kenneth Ray Lee of Texas, Gene Lee and Stacy Lee, both of Tennessee; daughter, Paula L. Blue of New York; stepchildren, Sharon Bodden, Deborah Bodden, Sabrina Bodden and Frank Bodden Jr.; his mother, Marie Marsh Lee of Aulander; sisters, Irene Foster of Aulander, Lena Askew of Simpsonville, Ky., and Ada Brown of Roosevelt; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Glen Moore

SEABOARD – Glen Moore, 49, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Seaboard, died March 19, 2004 at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Edith P. Scott

EL DORADO HILLS, CA – Edith Pelham Scott, a native of Alabama, died March 19, 2004, at Fountainwood Assisted Living, Sacramento.

A chapel service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, by the Rev. Luther J. Morris. Burial will be in the Scott family cemetery, Murfreesboro, on Lewis Road.

Survivors include his children, John A. Scott and Donald L. Scott, both of El Dorado Hills; six grandchildren; and three grandchildren.

Nyasia D. Tyner

WOODLAND – Nyasia Da’shay Turner, 2, a native of Northampton County, died March 22, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery.

Survivors include her father, Sylvester Tyner of Como; her mother, Kenyata Doughty of Woodland; a brother, EmiJay Halsey of Woodland; her great-grandmother, Mary Harmon of Ahoskie; grandfather, Raleigh Harmon of Woodland; and two grandmothers, Tina Harmon of Woodland and Virgie Tyner of Conway.

Hattie Ward

F.D. ROOSEVELT ISLAND, NY – Hattie Mae Cherry Ward, 64, a native of Bertie County, died March 19, 2004 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Astoria.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Lewiston. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Delores Holsing of Bay City, MI and Della Ward of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Albertia Veale of Lewiston, Bettie Wilkins of Baltimore, Md., Mamie Ward of Atlantic City, N.J. and Lucy Martin of Orange; and one stepbrother, Marvin Clark of Windsor.

Richard L. Jones

HAMPTON, Va. – Richard Lenor &uot;Dickey&uot; Jones, 64, of 14 Evans Street, and a native of Hertford County, died March 23, 2004, at his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Nickens Jones of Hampton, Va.; children, Christopher Dion Jones of Hampton, Va., and Natasha J. Wilson of Mechanicsville, Va.; his mother, Glennis B. Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Phyllis Johnson of Forestville, Md., Ruth West of Voorhees, N.J., Gwendolyn Jagernauth of Seattle, Wash., and Gayle Starr of North Potomac, Md.; three brothers, Arthur A. Jones, Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Willis Jones of Tucson, Ariz., and Joseph Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Kristin, Kourtney and Kauryn Wilson, all of Mechanicsville, Va.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with the Rev. William Ashe delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
