Walter L. Brock

AHOSKIE n Walter Lee Brock, 80, a native of Marianna, Fla., died August 21, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. He was the widower of Marie Horton Brock.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Paul Edwards. The family will receive friend at the home after the service. In lieu of flowers, those desiring, may make contributions to the Aulander Rescue Squad or Chowan College. Massey Funeral Home is in charge.

Brock was a retired saw mill operator.

Survivors include three sons, Rayburn L. Brock of Aulander, Johnny F. Brock of Ahoskie and Walter L. Brock Jr. of South Bend, Ind.; a sister, Emma Ruth Barfield of Fort St. Joe, Fla.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pearl Bowen

WOODLAND n Pearl Love Miles Bowen, 84, died August 20, 2005 at Halifax Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Rapids. She was the widow of Lloyd D. Bowen.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, Woodland, by the Rev. Heath Lloyd. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Volunteer Fire Department, Woodland, NC 27897. Sykes Funeral Service was in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur C. Bowen of Woodland and Phillip K. Bowen Sr. of Woodland; one brother, Walter C. Miles Sr. of Woodland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Verna M. Gilliam

FAYETTEVILLE n Verna Mae Gilliam, died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oxley Hill Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Burial will be Hillcrest Cemetery.

Dorothy G. Maurice

SUNBURY – Dorothy Gunter Maurice, 76, a native of Princeton, WVa., died Aug. 19, 2005, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Maurice was a homemaker, she had also worked as a file clerk at the Naval Air Station and as a receptionist with the family business, Maurice Electronics in Virginia Beach. She was a member of Damascus Christian Church in Sunbury.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Maurice; two daughters, Judy Gentry of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Sue Maurice of Coinjock; two sons, Billy &uot;Bucky&uot; Maurice Jr. and Raymond Maurice, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Gwendolyn Irick of Kentucky and Wanda Webb of Collosse, Va.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral was conducted Monday in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial followed in Princess Anne Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Hazel B. Chappell

NORFOLK, Va. – Hazel Bunch Chappell, 78, a native of Hobbsville, died August 18, 2005. She was the widow of Gaither Henry Chappell.

Mrs. Chappell was a member of the First Baptist Church Norfolk and the Elizabeth Park Civic League.

Survivors include her daughter, Vickie C. Altman of Norfolk; sons, Don H. Chappell of Virginia Beach and Louis J. Chappell of Norfolk; and a grandson.

A funeral was conducted Monday by Pastor Eric J. Thomas in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Hampton Roads, 6315 N. Center Drive, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502, in Hazel's name.

Ritha M. Fannin-Jones

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Ritha Mae Fannin-Jones, 75, a native of Cofield, died August 17, 2005, at home. She was the widow of Shellie Lee Jones.

Mrs. Jones and was a former member of Christian Antioch Church of God in Christ, Portsmouth.

Survivors include a daughter, Nora Clay Jordan of Woodbridge, Va.; four sons, Monroe Fannin, Charles Fannin, Samuel Fannin, all of Woodbridge, and Raymond Fannin of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren; a great- grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leroy Williams. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Virginia M. Greene

WINDSOR n Virginia M. Greene, 77, died August 16, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Greene was a member of Spellers Chapel Disciples Church and Cashie Chapter #261 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie Greene Sr.; three sons, Julius Bernard of New York, Jerald of Lewiston and Johnny Jr. of Windsor; two sisters, Emma Walton and Berneice Holloman of Ahoskie; one brother, Roger Holloman of Philadelphia, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Frances M. Johnson

ROCKY MOUNT n Frances May Johnson, 29, died August 20, 2005 at Nash General Hospital.

GATES n Willie Cross, died August 22, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

AHOSKIE n Lester Gilliam, a native of Hertford County, died in Florida.

Ethel R. Campbell

WILLIAMSTON n Ethel R. Campbell, 84, a native of Norfolk, Va., died August 18, 2005 at Williamston Rehab Center.

A funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Philippi Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Campbell was a retired intake clerk for NY Medicaid Office.

She is survived by a daughter, Allida Gupton of New York.

Lillian D. Riddick

ELIZABETH CITY n Lillian D. Riddick, 84, a native of Northampton County, died August 20, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Harold H. Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Charles Riddick Jr. of Elizabeth City; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
