AULANDER – Three suspects, including a 16-year-old, have been arrested while another is being sought in connection with residential break-ins here.

Aulander Police officers Brian Knowles and Jimmy Barmer made two arrests in the case on Sunday.

Donovan Robinson, 16, of 407 West Main Street, Aulander, was charged with five felonies – two counts each of breaking and entering and conspiracy and one count of larceny. He was jailed under a $5,000 secured bond.

Troy Powell, 21, of 101 Jernigan Lane, Aulander, was charged with one felony count of aiding and abetting.

Powell, who attempted to elude arrest on Sunday by running from the officers and hiding in a barn located behind an Aulander residence on Chestnut Street, reportedly became violent upon his arrest. That led to additional charges of two counts each of resisting arrest and assault on a government official.

According to Officer Knowles, Powell became unruly and belligerent during his appearance in front of a Bertie County Magistrate in Windsor on Sunday. That led the Magistrate to charge Powell with criminal contempt, thus landing him 30 days in jail.

Additionally, Powell allegedly attempted to drink glass cleaner at the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office as well as causing damage to a wall at the Sheriff’s Office when he hit it with his head.

Due to possible injuries, Knowles said Powell was transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital, but refused to be treated.

“Because of his demeanor at the Sheriff’s Office, we opted to take him to jail before a decision was made on his bond in the breaking and entering case,” Knowles said. “He’ll be processed on those charges at a later date.”

Officer Knowles said that Powell was also wanted on numerous other outstanding warrants from several counties.

Also charged in the case was 18-year-old Barry Futrell of 206 Harmon Street, Aulander. He turned himself in to the Bertie Sheriff’s Office on Sunday night where he was jailed on two felony counts each of breaking and entering and conspiracy and one count of felonious larceny.

A fourth suspect – Douglas Harrell, 22, of 404 West Main Street, Aulander – is currently being sought on the same charges as Robinson and Futrell.

The arrests stem from a residential breaking-and-entering reported by the homeowner at 10:30 a.m. on March 22.

“Two suspects made entry while homeowner was there; she confronted the suspects and they fled,” Knowles said.

Upon investigating the case, Knowles learned there were two break-ins of the same residence on the same day. He said the first break-in occurred between 9-9:30 a.m., a time when the homeowner was not at their residence. Knowles said video game equipment was stolen.

“The suspects went back to the residence a second time, apparently looking for other items to steal and were confronted by the homeowner and fled,” Knowles said.

The video game equipment was recovered later in the day on March 22. Upon further investigation, warrants were issued for the arrest of the four suspects.
