Mail theft alleged

MURFREESBORO — A former United States Postal Service employee is facing multiple felony charges after she allegedly stole money and gift cards from undelivered mail.

According to Murfreesboro Police Chief Darrell Rowe, Shay Babb Futrell of 109 Marks St., Seaboard, is facing those charges. Futrell was a carrier for the Murfreesboro Post Office.

“The Murfreesboro Police Department was contacted by a United States Post Office investigator in reference to possible theft of gift cards and money from the Murfreesboro Post Office,” Rowe said.

MPD Lt. Joe Burgess handled the investigation and charged Futrell with 10 felony counts of embezzlement. She was taken to the Hertford County Jail where she was placed on a $33,000 bond.

“Lt. Burgess is continuing the investigation and further charges are possible as more evidence is discovered,” Rowe said.

He continued by thanking Burgess for his police work.

“I’d like to thank Lt. Burgess for his quick and professional handling of this case,” Rowe said.
