MURFREESBORO—Officials are seeking to improve public safety even more here.

At a recent Murfreesboro Town Council meeting, Public Safety Director and Police Chief Darrell Rowe reported that the mapping portion of the Enhanced 911 (E911) system was now operating.

Rowe said when a call comes in to the Murfreesboro Police Department a map will be displayed on a computer screen showing the origin of the call and allowing emergency services personnel to pin point the caller’s location.

The original part of the system allows dispatchers to see the address from where the call is placed.

E911 allows emergency workers to lock in the location to where they need to respond.

Rowe said this type of technology comes in handy especially if a call is cut off, goes dead or if the caller gets “excited” and forgets to tell the dispatcher the address.

The system is a self sustaining as the E911 Fund will support it without the use of taxpayers’ money.

Rowe also said he is in the process of studying the CodeRED Emergency Notification System.

CodeRED, which has been implemented in neighboring Northampton County, would allow pre-recorded emergency bulletins to be placed to citizens via the telephone.

The notification system would alert citizens to any emergency, from inclement weather to a lost child to water contamination.
