EDENTON – Post 40 broke open a 10-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth here last week.

That four-run outburst helped Edenton’s Senior American Legion Post top Ahoskie Post 102 by a final of 14-11.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first frame.

Daniel Merritt singled to right and went to third on a Brandon Warren double to left-centerfield. Merritt raced home on a wild pitch before Warren scored on a Tyler Burden RBI-single to center.

Edenton bounced back with a run in the home half of the first, closing the deficit to 2-1.

Post 102 added another run in the top of the second inning.

Billy Nixon doubled to left-center field and went to third on a Mitchell Godwin single to left. Nixon then scored when Merritt reached on a dropped third strike to extend Ahoskie’s lead to 3-1.

Post 40, however, came back again and added a run in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 3-2.

Ahoskie added one more run in the top of the third inning.

Jud Smith walked and Burden had a bunt single. Both advanced on a wild pitch. Smith then scored on a Blake Hill RBI-groundout to up the lead to 4-2.

Edenton scored again in the bottom of the inning to close the gap back to one run.

In the fifth inning, Ahoskie pushed three marks across.

Burden had an infield single, stole second and went to third on an error. Hill then belted a two-run homer to center to push the lead to 6-3.

Ahoskie wasn’t done, however, as Nixon walked and went to second on a wild pitch. He then scored on a Marvin Harrell RBI-single to left as Post 102 grabbed a 7-3 lead.

That advantage was completely erased in the bottom of the fifth, however, as Edenton scored six times and took a 9-7 lead.

Ahoskie closed the gap to one with a single run in the sixth – coming off a solo homer by Smith. Edenton, however, scored again in the bottom of the sixth and led 10-8 after six complete innings of play.

Ahoskie added two more in the top of the eighth.

Warren singled to center and moved to third when Smith doubled. Warren scored on an RBI-single off the bat of Burden and then Smith scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 10-all.

Post 40, however, pushed across four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hunter Early had the key hit with a two-out, two-run single to right as Edenton took a 14-10 lead.

Ahoskie scored once more in the ninth frame.

Nixon had an infield single and went to second on a Godwin sacrifice bunt. Merritt was then hit by a pitch. Nixon scored on a Warren RBI-double to right-center, but a strikeout ended the game.

Ahoskie used three pitchers during the contest – Nixon, Ryland Edwards and Hill. Early was the winning pitcher for Edenton.

During the contest, Ahoskie had a season high for hits and runs with 11 runs and 19 hits. Warren and Burden both had four hits during the game while Harrell, Smith, Hill and Nixon had two each.

Post 102 dropped to 3-9 overall with the loss.
